California Budget Scam - Pay Up Carlos Slim - And Ban The Teacher's Union!

Mea Culpa. I must confess I voted for Schwarzenegger. I heard on the radio that he is talking about cutting programs like CalWorks and medical assistance to the disabled. This makes me so angry I want to personally run him out of the state.

Of all the cynical, low, disgusting scare tactics I have heard, this takes the cake. The CalWorks program, for example, is an assistance program that is only available to US citizens. It also rewards those who work but still can't make ends meet.

CalWorks has a budget of about $1.2 billion. That money goes to US citizens. I don't mind paying for that. Compare that to the entire Dept. of Health and Human Services budget of $29,800,607,000. That's almost $30 billion. As anybody knows who has had to visit an emergency room in California, there are no such protections for the remainder of the spending. We are being bankrupted by Mexico.

California's biggest expense, however, is the K-12 education system. We spent $41,144,462,000 - that's BILLION on K-12 education or the so-called public school system. It is a garbage system. How many of Mexico's children are California taxpayers paying to educate? How long are we going to tolerate being taken to the cleaners? You do realize that there is a point where California just can't afford it any more - no matter how many of those stupid teachers "protest" being laid off. There is a point of no return where California just becomes Mexico. I think we are at that point.

Although I have lived here all my life, I am now, for the first time, considering leaving California. I know plenty of people who have already done so - people who paid more into the system than they took out.

We were invaded while we slept - and now I think it might be too late for California. If the Federal Government passes an amnesty, we are lost.

To fix this, we must

1. Abolish the teachers' union; remove it completely from our school system. Their main goal is to grab money and power - not educate children. They are working a numbers racket - the more children - domestic or imported - the more money they are able to steal. They use that money to buy politicians. We must demand that only NON-UNION teachers and adminstrators be employed by public schools.
   
   
2. Come down hard on businesses who employ illegal aliens. Huge fines and jail time. Why should California taxpayers subsidize sleaze-bag "businesses"? - if they can't make a profit without breaking the law, I DON'T CARE!
   
   
3. Continue to provide emergency services and medical care as we currently do, with the exception that we will determine the patient's country of citizenship or legal residency, and then present that country's governenment with the bill - which can either be paid or subtracted from any aid our government gives them. OR, Better yet, they can impose a special "Billionaire tax" (Was it 12 billionaires for Mexico???) on their own citizens to come up with the money. Why are we penalizing rich and successful Californians when these scumbags get off scott free?

If you notice, my suggestions do not include letting poor, immigrant Mexicans die in the street, or ripping their children out of the classroom. They are just as much victims of circumstance as are the citizens of California. The reason the situation in this state has come to this is not because poor Mexicans come stateside. The reason is because certain people are getting filthy rich, and others are getting filthy powerful and benefit greatly when poor Mexicans come stateside. This is not going to change until we remove the incentives and take away their power.

Open your eyes! Abolish the teacher's union and hold Mexico accountable!

A telephone will always be found in the home of a thrifty housewife, and if it is a large home you will find an extension phone. She will tell you that this saves her many steps during the day.

If the necessity arises during the night that you must make a phone call or answer one, an extension phone will save you a trip downstairs. It costs only a few cents a day - just telephone for one.

Long distance also is a wonderful convenience. In a few minutes an invitation can be delivered to someone miles away and a guest will attend a party who could not have been reached in time without the telephone.

On Boring Housewifery

I don't know how many emails I have received from housewives who tell me about the comments made to them by some women upon learning they are a housewife.

"Aren't you bored?"

"I would be sooooo bored if I didn't work"

"We are liberated now, you don't have to do that"

Or

Silence and the polite smile or shocked stare

Well, I was mulling this over this morning and then I tried to remember the last time I was bored. I had to go back quite some time - to when I had one of those "exciting" jobs in an office to come up with an example.

As I remember it, I was constantly bored. I couldn't wait until lunch and then I couldn't wait until 5:00 - and boy did those hours, minutes and seconds tick by slowly. Granted I have had jobs that were more challenging and interesting where I didn't watch the clock - but there was a period every single day - sometimes an hour sometimes just 5 minutes when I was genuinely bored.

I almost feel nostalgic about boredom.

I have not been bored for one single second since I became a housewife. Stressed out, overworked, spread too thin - absolutely - but not bored. I am always playing catch-up with cleaning, laundry, shopping, organizing, bill paying etc. so were I to have some extra time on my hands, I would know exactly what to do with it.

Then there are the fun projects I get to take on - like working on my website, or working on the prom committee, helping my kids out with their various activities - or taking our dogs for a walk and watching them try to outsmart me so they can run off (only works 50% of the time...), or seeing the proud looks on their furry faces when they come trotting out of the field with a mangled, dead gopher dangling from their mouths, or trying to outrun same dogs as they try to present me with same mangled dead gopher. Or grabbing my camera and heading off to photograph the ordinary and sometimes the extraordinary, or reading up on things - I could go on for hours.

I feel sorry for my husband who has to get up every morning and drive off to work to do much the same as he did yesterday and the day before that. I try not to rub it in or go on and on about how much I love being a housewife - but if you really want to know the truth - I've got the best gig in town!

I am not the author of this, but I could be - I am sure many of you out there will recognize yourselves as well! Happy Mother's day (One day late - hey it was Mother's day!)

If you give a Mom a muffin, She'll want a strong cup of coffee to go with it.

She'll make herself some.

Her three year old will spill the coffee.

She'll wipe it up.

Wiping the floor, she'll find dirty socks.

She'll remember she has to do laundry.

When she puts the laundry in the washer, she'll trip over boots and bump into the box of Goodwill items.

Bumping into the Goodwill items will remind her she has to get these boxes in the car and out of her basement.

When she puts the boxes in the car, she'll find a bag of groceries and this will remind her she has to cook dinner.

She will get out the chicken defrosting in the fridge.

She'll look for her cookbook (101 Things To Do With Chicken).

The cookbook will be sitting under a pile of mail.

She will see the Netflix movie she's meant to mail; the preschool bill, which is due tomorrow.

She will look for her checkbook.

The checkbook will be in her purse that is being dumped out by her one year old.

She'll smell something funny. She'll change the baby's diaper.

As she finishes up, she'll realize she brought the hand sanitizer down to the kitchen.

While she is throwing away the diaper and searching for the hand sanitizer, the phone will ring.

Her three year old will answer and hang up.

She'll remember she wants to phone a friend, not for coffee, but for a very strong drink.

Thinking of drinking will remind her that she was going to have a cup of coffee in order to stay awake for the rest of the day.

And chances are.. If she finds her cup of coffee (which she has to reheat by now), Her kids will have eaten the muffin that went with it.

The Political Housewife - Dag Nab It

I just wanted to make a few quick points:

1. On Obama's spending plan: It is a scary number. - In general, I think we need less government spending, not more. However, I voted for Barack Obama for a reason. Not because he is black, but because for the first time since I can remember, actually since Ronald Reagan, the things that come out of his mouth make sense.
   
   Reagan took office during a time of recession but still began an unprecedented defense build-up which created unprecedented deficits. It was a time when America was perceived to be weak and vulnerable by the rest of the world which creates a very dangerous situation for US AND the rest of the world.
   
   In the end, Reagan was right. The economy grew, the deficits subsided, and we went on our merry way. Oh yeah, the Soviet Union collapsed and lots of people got to stop living under repressive dictatorships.
   
   Obama took office at a time when our financial system was on the brink of collapse. He was FORCED to take extreme measures - all of you complaining about him would be screaming at the top of your lungs if he had not done so. Because this is what your life would have looked like:
   I am not exaggerating or being dramatic, the economy was about to go into a tailspin. We are not out of the woods yet, but for the time being, it seems we may have averted disaster.
   
   It would have been nice if Obama had been able to inherit a government in control of its spending, but the previous administration, despite being the party supposedly advocating fiscal conservatism, had already spent us into a hole. They did so by lying to us. The monies spent on Iraq were not included in the official budget deficit figures.
   
   If you want less of a deficit, talk to your representatives in Congress. I got an email from Barbara Boxer bragging about how she had secured big subsidies for almond growers in California. I am still not sure why I should think it is a good thing for my tax dollars to be given to almond growers instead of getting to keep them myself. But then I will not be voting for Barbara Boxer or any of her democratic ilk.
   
   
2. I am tired of half-wits that don't have 10% of the intelligence that Obama does, blathering on and criticizing his every word. I heard what he said about his criteria for choosing a new supreme court justice. It was a very reasonable, rational explanation of how he would go about it. I understand Obama has some experience in the area of constitutional law. I wonder how many of those TV idiots can spell "constitution".
   
   
3. What we really need to be concerned about is the trend of state governments to completely ignore the will of the people and enact legislation, such as the legalization of gay marriage, which the public clearly does not want.
   
   
4. For Californians: If you vote for Propositions 1A - 1F, please get in touch with me because I have some great deals on a bridge in Brooklyn and some land in Florida. I will sell them to you for 2 cents on the dollar! What a DEAL!

Here is the offer on Oprah's site, and here is a straight link to the place where you can print the coupon: note that you have to have a very annoying little program installed called The Coupon Printer. I'm thinking it's harmless, but it is still annoying - you have to have your printer settings just so - or it won't print. In particular, you can't print to file, and you have to uncheck the box in your printer's properties Advanced Tab (right click will get you to the properties tab of anything on a windows pc.) that lets you "Keep Printed Documents". Once you do that, you should be kitten.

If anyone knows of a hack for that Coupon Printer thingy, I'd be interested in hearing about it.

Stuff I've Noticed - Or Am I Imagining It?

It seems to me that:

1. Black people have gotten nicer. It seems to me that something has vanished that was once there; a wall or tension or something. I have had more chit-chatty conversations with black people post Obama than in all my years pre Obama. - I am talking about the kind of conversations you strike up with strangers while standing in line, on a plane, or just walking on the beach. I wonder - have I changed? Or has the world changed? Or is it just my perception of the world that has changed?
   
   I took these photos back in 2007 - when the Prez came through town for a rally at Santa Barbara City College. Was I lucky, or what?
   
   
   
   
2. New Yorkers have gotten nicer. I am almost disappointed at this one. Somehow I found it comforting to know that there was a place on earth where people would be rude to you no matter who you are. It was a good kind of rude. The kind you knew not to take personally - and would even make you smile - because now you had your very own NYC story - and for a flash of a second, a girl from California could feel like she fit in, was one of those amazing people living life 12 times faster than everyone else in the world. People were really NICE - hospitable - even outwardly FRIENDLY! I am worried.
   
   
   

Which reminds me... I wanted to give this hotel a plug: the roger smith hotel. This is one example of the niceness I am talking about. I asked them if I could take a few photos of the hotel, and they not only said yes, they invited me to go into the restaurant as well. Which I did. I tried to do the same thing in San Jose a year ago and they had security come talk to me. Go figure.

Anyway, I walked by the roger smith hotel countless times on the way back to my hotel, and each time I wondered about a hotel named roger smith, and what they had done to the Shift key on their keyboards to make them unable to use capital letters. But then I remembered I was in New York City and that people were just bold like that.

Here is how the hotel roger smith describes itself:

Pretty accurate - although whoever wrote that is probably from New Jersey because they lost their nerve and resorted to upper case letters for proper nouns.
